Balbir Singh Junior, who was a member of the silver medal-winning 1958 Asian Games Indian hockey group, died right here on the age of 88, his daughter Mandeep Samra mentioned on Tuesday.
He is survived by his spouse, daughter and son.
“My father handed away in sleep on Sunday morning attributable to coronary heart failure,” his daughter mentioned.
His son is settled in Canada and couldn’t attend the final rites of his father due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Born on May 2, 1932, at Sansarpur in Jalandhar, often known as the nursery of Indian hockey, Balbir Singh Junior had performed alongside legends like Balbir Singh Senior, Leslie Claudius, Prithipal Singh, Balkishan and Charles Stephen amongst others.
Singh took to hockey when he was six years previous. He studied at Lyallpur Khalsa College in Jalandhar and was first chosen to play for the Indian hockey group in 1951 in the course of the tour of Afghanistan.
He was a part of the Punjab state hockey group and likewise captained Panjab University group. Later, he additionally performed for the Indian Railways group that toured European nations corresponding to Spain, Switzerland and Italy. The group additionally performed Test matches in Netherlands.
In 1962, he joined the Army as an emergency commissioned officer. He performed for the Services hockey group within the nationwide tournaments at Delhi. Singh retired as a Major in 1984 and later settled in Chandigarh.
Post retirement he took eager curiosity in enjoying golf.
